It is not an easy path to choose to woodfire, it gets harder to source the wood I want and willing firing assistants. Carbon emissions is an ever present black cloud hanging over our heads, should I feel guilty burning all that wood? I think not. The past ten years we have lived with drought, this has seen my work practises change as the water levels have gone down. The bush around where I live has dried, cracked and turned to dust, it is these stories I attempt to tell with my work. I make Australian pots that tell tales of land and fire, for the most part they are non-functional and non traditional.
I am inspired by the Australian landscape, the colours, textures and spirit of our land, I like to see evidence of the firing on my work, I love a good wad mark and the effects I get from layering the same few glazes on different clays is always a surprise. The challenge and chance of firing with wood is very satisfying and something I hope to keep doing for quite a while.
